ENERGY LOSS DUE TO REFLECTION

The outmost layer of a solar panel is a protective glass layer.

While energy loss at
normal incidence (middle of the day) is only at around 4-5%, there can be more than
40% loss at the beginning and end of the day. Adding anti-reflection coatings
(ARC) to the solar panels reduces the reflection problem. These coatings only
compensate for about 2% of the energy loss.

 

Conventional Coatings work by creating a layer of material on top of the glass.

This coating has its optical property, or index of refraction, between that of air and
glass. This coating effectively creates smaller “steps” in the index change from air to
the coating to the glass instead of one big “step” from air to glass. This approach can
decrease reflection by ~2% in the middle of the day when reflection is at ~4%.
However, at the beginning and end of the day, reflection can be higher than 40%.

 

Edgehog's nanotextures features a fundamentally different approach to
anti-reflection.

Instead of creating smaller steps in the index change, the nanotextures
on the glass surface creates a gentle gradient in the index from the air into the
glass. In essence, light never sees an interface. Hence there is no reflection of any
colour of light or when light is coming at an angle.

ANNUAL ENERGY GENERATION RATING

Solar panel efficiency determines how much energy the panel generates around
noon.

But it does not tell us how much energy is generated at other times of the day. Is your solar panel working great all the time? How does your panel compare with another panel with slightly lower efficiency but better wide-angle anti-reflection? The only way to consistently compare the panels' performance is to
look at sum total of energy generated throughout the year, the annual energy rating. "Annual" is the key!

The annual energy generation depends on the wide-angle performance of the anti-reflection, the panel's efficiency, the angle of installation of the panel, the climate and geography of the location and many more. Ideally, the panel manufacturers would provide the annual energy generation estimate for the panels
based on the customer's location.

However, that’s not common practice. As such, the poor energy performance during off-peak periods (mornings and evenings) are not well reported. Edgehog’s omni-directional AR glass specifically addresses this problem.

  • LCOE is decreased by ~5% for most utility installations.
